Prevention

Cardiovascular diseases are still the main cause of death worldwide. With preventive cardiology, we want to do our best to prevent you from suffering from heart disease one day. We pay attention to and treat the most important risk factors that promote heart disease. These include high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol/lipoprotein (a), smoking, lack of exercise, diabetes and stress. By adopting a healthy lifestyle, you can do a lot yourself to help prevent heart disease. So exercise regularly, eat a varied diet and adopt good stress management.

If you eat vegetables, fruit, fish and wholegrain products often, your heart will thank you. Legumes and nuts should also be part of your diet. Salt, sugar, alcohol, saturated fats and processed foods, on the other hand, should only be consumed rarely.

When you stop smoking, you are not only doing something good for your heart. Smoking - like alcohol - is an important factor that promotes the development of cancer. Cigarette smoke causes higher blood pressure and a higher heart rate. Even passive smoking increases the risk. Alcohol consumption is one of the most common causes of atrial fibrillation, a well-known cardiac arrhythmia.

Good and sufficient sleep is just as important for heart health. Diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is essential not only because of the daytime sleepiness and tendency to fall asleep, which then improve, but also to improve the cardiovascular prognosis.

Prevention is at least as important as good treatment. Heart disease is detected early and we can often help without further complications.

Sports medicine/sports cardiology

Sports medicine in cardiology focuses on how sport and exercise affect the heart and the aorta. Even if you already suffer from heart disease or are prone to aortic dilatation, this does not mean that you can no longer do sport. Quite the opposite - sport is actually good for many heart diseases and/or other risk factors (e.g. due to genetics). Professional support with regular medical examinations is particularly important for competitive athletes. We carry out heart screening for recreational and professional athletes and advise you on whether sport or competitions are possible and recommended for your heart problem.
