Cardiac catheter examinations

Great effect thanks to a thin catheter

Cardiac catheter examinations have been performed for over 70 years, at that time only for diagnostic purposes (pressure measurements and visualization of vessels), today increasingly also for therapeutic purposes (vasodilatation, valve implantation, closure of defects).

A cardiac catheter is a thin tube that is inserted into the heart via a vein or artery from the arm or groin. This is done under local anesthesia (local anesthesia of the skin at the puncture site). As the vessels themselves have no pain receptors, the further examination is painless. The catheter is then advanced into various cardiac cavities and vessels under X-ray control and the pressure in the various sections of the heart can be measured through the lumen. With the help of contrast medium through the catheter, heart chambers and vessels can be visualized. This allows diseases of the heart and blood vessels to be precisely detected.

Using the same technique, balloons and stents can be inserted into vessels through a catheter to correct constrictions and occlusions, close defects or repair heart valves. As a result, major open heart surgery is no longer necessary in many cases.

Complications are rare, the risk depends on the complexity of the procedure and is of course discussed in detail during planning. From the preliminary consultation to the cardiac catheterization and any aftercare, we are at your side with advice and support as a competent team. You are therefore always in the best hands with us.
