Electrophysiological examination and catheter ablation

Treating cardiac arrhythmias correctly

Here you will learn about another method for treating cardiac arrhythmias.

In some patients with cardiac arrhythmia, an electrophysiological examination is appropriate. We will refer you to our electrophysiologists at the Cardiovascular Medicine department of Klinik im Park: PD Dr. med. C. Binggeli, PD Dr. med. C. Scharf and Prof. J. Steffel. During the electrophysiological examination, so-called catheters (approx. 2 mm thick cables) are inserted into the heart via a vein in the groin, with the procedure being monitored by an X-ray machine. The heart's currents are conducted through the catheter at various points. An attempt is made to deliberately trigger the arrhythmia.

After a detailed examination, the structures responsible for the arrhythmia can be treated immediately. We use radiofrequency energy (high-frequency alternating current) to heat or locally obliterate the tissue (ablation). During the procedure, painkillers and sedatives are administered and the blood is thinned. Some procedures are performed under general anesthesia, preceded by a swallowing ultrasound.

During the consultation beforehand, we will advise you on the various methods and treatment options and explain the advantages and disadvantages to you. We will inform you about the procedure, possible complications and subsequent care.

The examination is carried out at the Hirslanden Klinik im Park. You should stay in the clinic for one to two days after the procedure. During your stay at the clinic, you will of course be personally accompanied and looked after by us as usual.
